What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Today I continued working on my goals and dreams - oh and I finally filed my UK taxes - my goodness been 3years :). I start my day by making a list of what I want to achieve - I do a work list, family list and personal list - initially i would list at list 10 items and only able to achieve one or 2 , but now I've minimized it to 3 each category - small manageable chunks - and I love been able to cross it off at the end of the day.

What have you done today to make you feel proud? M-People

[Running] Ran my personal best on a 10k

OMG!! I ran the NCR Sprint for Cancer 10k in under 54mins (unofficial time) -the results are yet to be posted. The clock showed a finish time of 54:38 secs but I started a minute or so after the kick-off - I cannot believe it - that works out to be under 9mins per mile (8.53-8.69). Go JoJo!!! Goes to show that consistency does really pay off - I've been working out a whole lot lately - from running to kickboxing to bootcamps to pilates etc - making sure I fully utilize my gym membership :) .

I started running 4years ago, my very first race was a Half Marathon - I went from 0 to 13.1 miles in maybe 3mths or so - I completed the race in 2h 17m (10.45min mile), fast forward 3years and I had shaved 45secs off my time and was quite happy with the 10min per mile - even with my knee injury I was still doing 10-11mins. When I completed the Georgia Half a month ago I finished in 2h 7min (9.77 min mile)- not quite sure how I did so with my knee and the very hilly and difficult course but I finished and was again happy with my progress..

My 10k results of ~54mins is just beyond me- I'm not sure how -I don't even recall running that fast - I remember wanting to stop at mile 2. I do long runs on Sunday(10miles +) and I truly enjoy them so wasn't sure why this 10k was just dragging , after mile 3 or so I thought I'm just going to finish this thing and be done with it - and that is exactly how I finished - the last 0.5mile I sprinted - I saw the finish line and was uber excited and ran like crazy to it - I stopped so abruptly after crossing the line and that led to extreme nausea  - I literally had to hold my mouth to stop myself from puking (sorry too much info) - I hurried quickly to curb and laid flat on my back for a few mins until the nausea subsided....that was indeed a 1st for me -  I guess this comes with running 8.5min mile -OMG! did I really do that - to think my very 1st training I could barely run the 3miles without huffing and puffing, I walked most of it and complained the entire time - to go from that to loving to run and running 8.5min mile - shhuu I'm celebrating this milestone for real - - SO RAISE YOUR GLASS with me  :)

[Hair lookback] 15months fro

'I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am a soul that lives within' - India Arie

I've been natural now for 3years - It's been one heck of a journey - I've been thru the hiding phase (i.e hiding under weaves and braids), the curl/length obsession phase , the product junkie phase, the 'I want to go back to relaxer' phase, the my 'hair is too ugly & tough phase' to' I am not my hair' phase, to connecting with my soul (kinda deep ish) but yes I really did connect with my soul - who would've thought natural hair would take me there eh:)

Anyhoo -today I'm simply comfortable and extremely happy with my hair - I no longer need to force it to do what it wasn't created to do - some days it looks uber fab and others not - -some days it is begging for water and others it is just right,.....in short I'm still learning and loving and embracing my God given tresses and it's utter uniqueness.

[Protective style] Wet and Wavy Wig

Once you go the wig route you'll never go back :)  - Wigs are just so much easier. Some days I really just can't be bothered with my hair - lol i know this is same ole excuse but it's the truth - I truly don't see myself rocking a sew-in, so for now I'm enjoying my wigs - even crotchet is becoming hard work :)

Below is my Wet and Wavy wig -  I used Femi  Indian Afro Curl hair - 2packs.

[Breaking news] I can ride a bicycle

Google images

You really can do anything you set your mind to

I can now ride a bicycle. It's taken me a few decades to learn but I can gladly say YES I CAN ride a bicycle. This may not be a big deal for most but it is for me. I never learnt how to ride one growing up, my parents always promised to get me a bicycle if I passed my exams. I always did pass them all but the bicycle never came.

When my husband found out I couldn't ride he took it upon himself to teach me - bought a hybrid and we set-off to the park a few times - but that was all a total disaster - It left me even more frightened and hopeless. I just couldn't get the hang of it - - fast forward years later to 2012 and I thought I really ought to give this another go and so I did.

A friend of mine who also cannot ride found a great adult learning course with Atlanta Bicycle Coalition. The True beginners class it's called. As soon as she told me I hurriedly went to their website and signed up like my life depended on it. The class lasted circa 4hrs . The tutors were beyond great. We were taught the basics of cycling, bicycle parts, safety checks, Cycling 101 etc - after 30-45mins of theory we set-off for the park. I was beyond nervous - OMG! this is really happening.

They were 8 of us in the group and we started off by scooting, then coasting (this was a real test of balance) as you had to do it without your legs touching the floor, then lastly pedaling - and that came naturally or when we felt comfortable to do so. I honestly thought it would take me 2-3lessons but I got it the 1st time - I'm well chuffed - - I wish I could call my Daddy and tell him the good news -- but I'm sure he's up there looking down and smiling at me - saying Go Baby! That's my girl!

My next step is to sign up for a bike tour/race...well technically the next step is to purchase a bicycle :)  -I'm for sure going to get a hybrid....YAY!!

Tis never too learn - all it takes is motivation and willingness to do so.

Nneka in ATL

I went to see Nneka perform live at Vinyl last Saturday. It was an amazing performance. She is so real , so laid back, carefree albeit the hubby thought she was a wee high :) - she didn't bother dressing up for show, no make-up, no fancy garms - just pure soul . My favorite performances were Uncomfortable truth, Vagabonds in power, Shining star, Africans - infact i loved it all.
