Quote of the day

“Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better. What if they are a little coarse, and you may get your coat soiled or torn? What if you do fail, and get fairly rolled in the dirt once or twice. Up again, you shall never be so afraid of a tumble. ”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

All my help cometh from the Lord

Was feeling down earlier today and my mind wondered to Psalm 121 : My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth....searched for the song online and found Lionel Peterson's version. Lionel Peterson is like my favourite christian artist of all time....and that led to his song Peace.

Peace brought poignant memories of my best friend who passed away at the young age of 17. That song was what saw me through - I was maybe 12 then when she passed - she was just like a sister to me.
After listening to Peace I suddenly awoke and remembered that I have nothing to be down about - I'm indeed grateful for breath, for health and for my family

Jojo's Kitchen - Dinner with Kale

Gosh - back to back food postings - am I really on a FAST :)
Anyhoo - this is what we had for dinner today

Daddy bear : - Chicken curry and brown basmati rice
Mummy bear - Kale and brown basmati rice
Lil bear          - Kale and brown basmati rice

The curry was a lastminute.com idea - it came out a wee running - should have added corn-starch - but daddy bear loved it all the same.
As per the basmati rice err daddy bear HATES brown rice with a passion but somehow can tolerate the basmati variant. Well I usually stir-fry the rice - this time I did so with onions, cabbage and a tad bit of stock cubes - both men loved it....so mummy bear is happy .

Anyhoo tis our last date with Kale for the week - on to the next one now

Daddy bear - Curry chicken & rice

Mummy bear - Kale and greens

Lil bear - kale and greens

MANNA Bread ...I love

OMG! How excited I was to have found a bread that ticks all the boxes per the Daniel Fast requirements - it is free of salt,  no oils, no sweeteners , no leavening agents....it's almost like cake - it's so yummy -the only downer is the price $4.69 for bread of a maybe 5-6inch of bread is a wee much if you ask me - but I definitely loved the taste.

As you can see I got the Multigrain one. They only had multigrain and cinnamon at my local wholefoods

Check out the ingredients - Sprouted organic wheat kernels, filtered water, organic brown rice, organic barley, organic millet, organic flax seed, organic rye kernels, organic soy beans, organic rolled oats, organic oat bran, organic cornmeal.

You can read more about it here http://www.mannaorganicbakery.com/index.php

I'm still on the Daniel Fast so can't eat Fish till the end of the month. I can't believe he ate all the greens - usually he will have a taste and go nah can't eat it - too 'healthy' or not spicy enough (I'm an African man I need my pepper) - this time I made sure I added enough peppers (3 habaneros to be exact) - err do not try this at home - it is SUPER hot - but it was just right for him....nose running and all :). I love it when he cleans the plate - I love cooking and love it when my meal is very well enjoyed.

“College is something you complete. Life is something you experience. So don't worry about your grade, or the results or success. Success is defined in myriad ways, and you will find it, and people will no longer be grading you, but it will come from your own internal sense of decency. ”

The Guest House by Rumi

Just discovered this beautiful poem on life and thought to share -

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

~ Rumi ~

Learning to ride a bike as an adult

source - google images

Yup I cannot ride a bicycle :( - I can drive, I can run, shuu I even taught a kid how to ride but I can't ride a bike to save me life - <holds heads in shame>
Growing up my parents always promised me a bike for my birthday if I did well in school - which I always did - but somehow it always got postponed - so I never really got it.

Fast forward decades later and the hubby was shocked that I could not ride a bike. He took it upon himself to teach me how to ride - he bought a bike and we went on a few trips - DISASTER!!! Let's just say spouses are not suppose to teach - or maybe I just wasn't ready - but for some reason he just didn't understand how something so easy was yet so difficult for me to grasp - - after maybe 3 failed attempts  I gave up - I just didn't want him to teach me anymore - that was the end of it .

This year I've put learning how to bike and completing a race on my imaginary to do list. I really have to overcome my fears and get on with it - I've been searching online and I've decided to get a road bike. Hubby and I will go check a few out this week - hopefully I get a good deal. I'm bent upon learning this time round - I'm getting knee pads, helmet, chest pads, eyepads lol etc and will practice on grassland - I've also been doing a wee bit of reading - if this fails then I'll sign up for bike lessons - I SHALL RIDE A BIKE this year IJN!! Can  I get an AMEN !!

More of my cycling adventure to come ...

Mummyhood - Gymboree Play and Learn

Source - google images

Ok so I've been looking for more ways to engage my overly smart and energetic 22month going 16years toddler. This child has way too much energy - my goodness!!.

In my search for new fun activities I came across Gymboree Play and Music - T already goes to Daycare but I wanted a wee bit more art and music in his curriculum. Growing up my Dad took me piano lessons, back then I hated it with a passion (I regret it now though - I wish I had explored that side of me)...anyhoo I'm digressing yet again

So I found Gymboree Play and Music online and thought to try it out. They have fun activities for 0-60months - there's Art, Music, Play and learn. , Sports etc. T has been going for about 3weeks now and he loves it.
The Music and Play class was good fun but the Art was a wee bit of a disaster. T was so restless - he did not want to sit still at all. We made two projects  - a pasta artwork (basically glued pasta to a plate and painted it) and a Maraca . T was not feeling any of it -I felt so discouraged because I really want him to learn/enjoy it - It was also pretty odd to see him so uninterested - he rather mess with the paint, climb the table and explore the room itself than sit still to decorate.
After about 30mins into the class I thought I better leave now - but then they brought in the bricks/shapes/building blocks and this definitely did it for him - he was super excited and built a few towers - and was screaming RECTANGLE, TRIANGLE, SQUARE - YAY!! so there's hope after all .

If you're looking for ways outside daycare to engage your young children I definitely recommend Gymboree Play and Learn. It is a wee pricey though ($74 for 4 classes) - But definitely worth it.

The Best hair conditioner award goes to.......

Trader Joe's Nourish spa

So I've searched high and low, tried it all from store bought, designer to 'all natural' handmade conditioners - all of which have left my hair somewhat ok. I went shopping last week at Trader Joe's and found myself in the beauty aisle looking for a new facial wash ; somehow the Nourish Spa conditioner caught my eye. My friend E mentioned she used it but never really sold it to me - I thought hmm $2.99 doesn't really break the bank - worst case I'll add my herbs and oils if it does not work.

Got home that evening and was all giddy about my new find - I shampooed me hair, then followed with an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse , braided my hair into small sections and applied the conditioner (I added a wee bit of olive and grapeseed oil). OMG!!! I have to say the difference was clear - it was like magic - normally conditioners take a while to work in my hair  - but I as soon as I applied it my hair felt incredibly moisturized and soft - detangling was super easy - I was overjoyed. I was instantly sold on it.
After applying I wrapped my head in cling film and sat under a hooded dryer for circa 30mins - HEAVEN!! my hair felt so good, so soft, so moisturizer, like butter - I think I've finally found my base conditioner - I say base because I always add something to the mix; usually essential oils, herbs, honey etc.

So the conditioner is dirt cheap, it works great, it has organic ingredients all good eh - so what's the catch? well I don't think there is one but it contains ......err PARABENS - Methylparaben and Propylparaben to be exact..I initially did not want to purchase but thought to I gave it a shot especially since the parabens are listed right at the end- I'm not an expert in a shape or form - parabens are harmful but the listing order shows it contains very little, almost insignificant amounts. As for me I think it is ok - please make that decision yourself. It's definitely a keeper for me.
